ATS and Storm Tracking
Founded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (N.O.A.A.), the National Weather Service (N.W.S.) provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. N.W.S. data and products form a national information database and infrastructure to protect.

Amature Radio operators are uniquely empowered to assist SkyWarn operations because of a number of factors inherant in most stations:

  • Self contained station, and in many cases portable (in a car, etc.)
  • Self powered (in many cases), unreliant on utility power.
  • Can communicate without communications infrastructure (telephone lines, cell towers, etc.)
  • Self locating (courtesy of APRS)

These features give the SkyWarn system operators extraordinary information about where ATS Amature Radio operators are, in addition to what they are reporting on.
